Born at the First Light
Mile 27 began at sunrise — literally.
Our founder traveled to New Zealand to run the First Light Marathon with his partner on her birthday. The race takes place in Gisborne, the first place on Earth to see the sun, and it felt like a moving reset button.
Somewhere along those early miles, he met Al, a runner with a prosthetic leg and the kind of presence that stays with you. They ran side by side, shared stories, and crossed the finish line as instant friends — the kind of connection endurance sports love to create.
A Race That Changed Everything
Months later, Al received an entry to the New York City Marathon through Achilles International, an organization empowering athletes with disabilities. He asked our founder to guide him for all 26.2 miles of his race.
For someone who spent nearly a decade trying to get into the NYC Marathon, this wasn’t just an invitation — it was a door finally opening.
Guiding Al wasn’t about times or pacing. It was about support, presence, and witnessing someone else’s determination up close. That race redefined what a “finish line” could mean.
From Poncho to Purpose
After the marathon, wrapped in the bright orange finisher’s poncho, he realized how meaningful — and how temporary — the item was. Something that represented grit and accomplishment was destined to be forgotten or thrown away.
So he reimagined it.
A single-use essential transformed into something functional and lasting.
That spark became Mile 27.
